Thousands of people around the world are saying prayers for an infant from Mound fighting a potentially deadly heart condition.
His following is extraordinary and it began online.
Jennifer McKinney has been at the hospital to be with her son Stellan round the clock while her husband cares for their three other young kids.
Stellan is a special five-month-old child. His name has been written in the sands of the west African desert, on cardboard next to the Eiffel Tower, and surrounded by hearts in front of an Argentinean sunset.
"It was our desire that a few people would know him before he died. We just wanted them to know his name and we were so proud of him," said McKinney.
McKinney thought her son Stellan would never take a breath. She was 20 weeks pregnant with her fourth child when he was diagnosed with SVT or supraventricular tachycardia—essentially, Stellan’s head beat was is fast.
But Stellan fought and was born healthy and stayed that way—until a week and a half ago. The five-month-old is now at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis fighting for his life.
McKinney says she gets through it all by her strong faith in God and her writing.
"I'm tired of feeling like I need to explain myself. I’m tired of getting advice when I’m trying to seek comfort and getting comfort when I’m trying to seek advice," McKinney writes in her online blog.
She started blogging years ago before Stellan was even born. But the big surprise is she never realized how far her story would spread.
"Since we've been in the hospital this week, it's been over 200,000 hits to my blog everyday which is hard to even conceptualize that," McKinney said.
People from all walks of life have connected to Stellan’s story. Nikki, an Arden Hills mother, has never met the McKinney family but stopped by the hospital Tuesday to bring them a meal.
"I have thought about it a lot as I tuck my kids into bed at night and thought about it a lot as we say our prayers, just being so thankful that we're as healthy as we are," Nikki said.
3 Personal Thoughts:
I just watched the video over on MCK site - very nice coverage!
I hope Jennifer can get some decent sleep soon. My sister and I have talked about when we get like that: so sleep deprived that you CAN'T sleep and you start feeling manic. They've been through so much the past 10 days.
Stellan is always on my heart. Thank you for being so faithful to that family! angela
What a wonderful piece. Thank you for sharing that.
